Back in the 60's, it was commonplace for gay bars to be raided by police; some estimates state that most gay bars were raided at least once per month. During the raids, the patrons and staff members were often "roughed up", searched, and arrested if they were found to be dressed in clothing considered inappropriate for their sex. On June 28, 1969, Manhattans' Stonewall Inn located in Greenwich Village was raided, but things didn't go as police anticipated. Riots spontaneously erupted and attracted the attention of patrons from nearby bars; the crowd grew into 500 to 600 people who were ready to fight back against police brutality. Although the violence subsided within several hours that first evening, it was rekindled for several more consecutive evenings. Many people consider this uprising the beginning of the gay rights movement in the United States.
