Transgender Star Laverne Cox to Host GLAAD Awards
This years GLAAD awards will be hosted by transgender star, Laverne Cox on May 14th in New York City. While Laverne Cox is a well known actress, her visibility has made her a natural advocate for the LGBTQ community. GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis expressed her excitement over the selection of Laverne Cox saying, "[we] look forward to the panache and style that only she can bring.”
While Laverne Cox is currently known for her role on the the Netflix show, Orange is the New Black, she will be staring in a remake of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The most iconic role role in the 1975 picture was Dr. Frank-N-Furter, which is the role Laverne Cox has signed on to play. Whether the picture will reach cult status like the original is unknown, but the role could be a career defining part for the Laverne Cox.
On top of announcing Cox as the host of the GLAAD awards, GLAAD also announced that the show will also honor Robert De Niro with an Excellence in Media Award for his role as the co-founder of the gay-inclusive Tribeca Film Festival and for documenting his fathers coming out in Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr.
